Salaam alaikum, a few few helpful hints. 1. The cap that the brother calls a toupi or topi is a rigid cap, the name topi is common in South Asia (India or Pakistan), but in Central Asia it is called a dopi, in some areas a Kullah, and the Salaf Arabs used to call it a Qalansuwwa. Any rigid brimless cap will do, like a fez, pheci, tarboush, etc.

Traditional adab; wear a soft kufi (“araqiyya”) under, then over that the rigid turban cap (topi/qalansuwwa), then the amama wrapped around it.

2. Brother wears a style common to Easterners.The Western Ummah in Africa or the Maghrib traditionally wore the tail (“shamla”) under their chins. This style is called “tahannuk”. Imam Malik wore it this way and so did some of the students of Imam Abu hanifa (rh)

The cloth is usually cotton, its length depends on the society and age. 5, or 7 meters is not unusual. The Prophet, peace and blessings upon him, had a long and a short one, which could wrap either 3 or 5 times, and Allah knows best.

3. I’ve found that 5 meters gives you a good 4-5 wrappings. As for width, 21 inches or so works, but try not to use cloth wider than a meter because it will be difficult to work with. In Africa, Sudan, Mauritania, Nigeria, the Amama may really long, some Berbers may have up to 11 meters. A length between 4 – 7 meters seems to be within the Sunnah.

The softer and thinner, the better. Use Voile or similar gauzy cottons. One type of thin muslin is “Mulmul”, or “F74″. Another is “Rubia”.
